An Overview on the Causes of Cerebral Palsy

A Brief about the Causes of Cerebral Palsy
It is difficult for anyone to tell a parent specifically what caused their child to have cerebral palsy. The reason is that pinpointing on what might have caused injury to the brain or how it could have been avoided is quite difficult . What is known is that the injury occurs prior to, during or just after childbirth. In order to get a better understanding of how the injury could have occurred, it is essential that you know of the causes of cerebral palsy.

Unlike diseases like chicken pox, mumps or measles cerebral palsy does not stem from a single origin. Cerebral palsy is a condition that is a mix of different disorders which are generally related, and the root cause of each of these disorders is different . Doctors who diagnose cerebral palsy should look at the child individually, examine the risk factors as well as symptoms, and go through the child's/mother's medical history

It might sound unbelievable but only about ten to twenty percent of all cerebral palsy cases occur because of post birth injuries (one of the causes of cerebral palsy). Most of the cases, about 70-80%, occur during pregnancy or the process of giving birth. Infection is regarded as the primary factor. When a baby is 'born' with the disorder, it simply means that the injury that resulted in the disorder occurred within the womb and could possibly have been avoided

In saying that the injury could have occurred during pregnancy, this would mean when the brain is just starting to develop or in the birthing process where the baby moves out of the 'birth canal'. Until a few years back, inadequate oxygen supply was looked upon as the principal cause of the condition. Recent statistics have shown that as few as ten percent of these cases start during childbirth. {The honest truth is that there are probably many cases that are caused by a combination of prenatal, perinatal and postnatal factors| The truth being that there are a number of cases which are caused to due postnatal, perinatal, and prenatal, factors combined| The fact of the matter is that there are scores of instances where the condition is caused to a combination of factors involving pre, peri, and postnatal conditions| However, the fact is that a number of cases occur due to factors which combine postnatal, perinatal, as well as prenatal aspects|.

The following risk factors should be looked into to minimize the chances of a bay getting cerebral palsy during pregnancy. If the mom suffers from an infection, or thyroid disorders, seizures or other medical problems then the risk is increased. Risk also goes up in instances where the baby is born with defects to the overall metabolism, head, face, lungs, or spinal cord. Also if there is a Rh factor incompatibility, which is the difference in the blood between mom and baby, if it is not detected and treated can cause the baby to suffer brain damage.

Further causes of cerebral palsy comprise of premature births, particular hereditary conditions, acute jaundice post birth, complications in labor/delivery, low body weight of the baby after delivery, in cases of twins/triplets, as well as inadequate oxygen supply for long periods during, before, or after childbirth.

If you think that the causes for cerebral palsy in your child could have been avoided you can always choose to approach an attorney who would then help you in getting compensated, thereby ensuring better care for your child.
